Dr. Weiming Hu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Georgia. He earned his B.Eng. in Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics from Wuhan University, and both his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Geography with a Minor in Computer Science from The Pennsylvania State University. Prior to joining UGA, he worked as a Machine Learning Scientist at the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego.
Dr. Hu’s research focuses on building accurate, reliable, and trustworthy machine learning models for Environmental and Earth Sciences. He is particularly interested in quantifying uncertainty from multi-source data—including remote sensing, model simulations, and ground observations—and from hybrid dynamical-machine-learning models. His work supports applications in renewable energy forecasting, extreme event prediction, and water resource management.
